2018 Dodge Journey vs 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Proudly Serving Golden, CO

As midsize SUVs, the Dodge Journey and the Jeep Grand Cherokee enter the 2018 model year with a lot of iterations logged into their current production cycles. The Journey debuted in 2009 and is still in its first go-round a decade later. And the Grand Cherokee is eight years into its fourth generation (WK2) of production. That doesn’t mean, however, that they are resting on their laurels as large and decently produced SUVs. Indeed, 2018 marks a year in which each vehicle incorporates significant changes to keep it competitive in a crowded and always-competitive segment. The Journey now has a standard third row, and the number of trims has been streamlined to four. On the Grand Cherokee, the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display, as well as Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ for smartphone-based control, are now standard; and there’s a brand-new trim. Granted, the 2018 Grand Cherokee has more adjustments, but ultimately it’s the 2018 Journey you should go for. Here’s why:

Seating and Passenger Volume

With the addition of a standard third row—which consists of two captain’s seats—the maximum occupancy of the 2018 Dodge Journey across all trims is increased to seven. In addition to two people in the third row, the second-row bench-style seat accommodates up to three people and front seating consists of driver and passenger seats. By comparison, the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee has two rows of seats to accommodate up to five people: two occupants short of the Journey’s peak. Plus, while the 2018 Dodge Journey provides a passenger volume of 123.7 cubic feet, the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee supplies 105.4 cubic feet of passenger volume, which is 18.3 cubic feet less.

Upper-Level Trim Efficiency

Want to mitigate the loss of fuel efficiency when getting the most powerful engine on either vehicle? The 2018 Dodge Journey is a wiser buy. You can upgrade from the standard 2.4-liter World inline 4-cylinder engine to the 3.6-liter Pentastar® V6 to maximize accelerating ability on the road by getting the top-level GT trim. And you will get a combined peak fuel economy of 21 mpg instead of 22 mpg, which is not an awfully huge drop-off. By contrast, get the brand-new Trackhawk® trim of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee—which is exclusively powered by the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V8—and the combined peak fuel economy of 21 mpg precipitously drops to 15 mpg.

Ride Smoothness

As larger vehicles, the 2018 Dodge Journey and the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee need all the nimbleness they can get to provide a smooth, composed ride. While the Jeep is not singled out for any exceptional ride quality beside off-road ability, the Journey is generally commended for being smooth even when driving over rough roads. And it is said to be remarkably quick for a vehicle its size.
