Serving Golden, Denver, and Lakewood, CO
Should you pick the 2017 Ram 1500 or step up to the Ram 2500? This is a question we hear often from our customers at Christopher's Dodge World. Since each vehicle model offers a variety, it is important to know the difference. This simple guide may help you decide. Please bring your questions to our staff.
Performance
The 1500 is enough for many truck owners on the job, at the farm or at home. A variety of engines offer tough and tougher ways to get your load moved. An eight-speed automatic transmission helps ensure precision. The power line-up starts with a 305-horsepower V-6 and a tow rating of 7,600 pounds. Automatic grille shutters helps this model keep fuel use to a minimum. The Ram EcoDiesel has earned recognition for its 27-mpg highway fuel economy. This powerhouse kicks out 420 lb.-ft. of torque. Tow ratings rise to 9,400 pounds. If you pick the V-8, you'll command 395 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft. of torque.
However, if your towing or hauling needs may exceed these limitations, you will want to consider the 2500. It is made tougher than the 1500, and its engine choices offer more horsepower and torque. The Ram 2500 5.7-liter V-8 starts you off right with 383 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. For more power, there's the 6.4-liter V-8 with 410 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque. With the turbo diesel, the Ram 2500 capability jumps to 660 lb.-ft. of torque. The beefed-up automatic allows the turbo diesel to achieve 800 lb.-ft. Maximum towing power is rated at 17,980 pounds. Maximum payload tops out at 3,160 pounds. Like the Ram 1500, the 2500 offers Ram's exclusive self-leveling air suspension.
Appearance
Inside the 1500 and 2500 resemble each other much more than ever before. There's very little quality difference between the 1500's handsome cabins and the 2500's. Trim levels are similar. In other words, 2500 buyers can get the same amenities, dash tech, and leather upholstery that they'll find in a 1500. The UConnect system puts an 8.4-inch touchscreen on the dash. Both earned top marks in the Edmunds shopping guide for classy cabins and class-leading ride quality. Although you can't see the insulation and engineering that makes it possible, these cabins are remarkably quiet. Furthermore, only the 1500 and 2500 have Ram's special five-link suspension that takes the bounce out of your daily commute.
Safety
The 2500 can measure up to the 1500 when it comes to safety. Both have a full contingent of airbags to protect the driver and passengers. LATCH attachments are common to the backseats of both trucks. It's easier to safeguard your children when you have anchors and tethers for the car seats. Also, traction controls regulate brake distribution on both models. You'll notice better handling as the car's electronic systems work to provide stability and balance. Of course, if you add a four-wheel drivetrain, these workhorses become even more capable of handling weather-related road threats. In addition to a rearview camera, shoppers can now get a special cargo view camera. This device makes it easier to hitch up a trailer.
