2018 Dodge Challenger vs 2018 Ford Mustang

Serving Golden, Denver, and Lakewood, CO

For as long as they have existed, the Dodge Challenger and the Ford Mustang have battled for American hearts as the ultimate muscle car. Configured to maximize on-road performance, both vehicles are present for the 2018 model year with tons of updates to keep them at the top level of the segment. You really can’t go wrong with either car; both provide agile handling, stylish exteriors, and loads of power. However, if you must choose one over the other, it has to be the 2018 Dodge Challenger. Here’s why:

With either vehicle, you have several engine choices, so you can go with a higher-level trim to maximize driving performance. On the 2018 Ford Mustang, you can go with the top-level Shelby trim, which is unique with its 5.2-liter Voodoo V8. This engine supplies 526 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. Prior to the 2018 model year, Chrysler, the Dodge Challenger’s manufacturer, provided the SRT® Hellcat as the car’s top-level trim. It is powered by the aptly-named 6.2-liter HEMI® SRT® Hellcat V8 supercharged engine, which provides 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. That outguns the Voodoo engine by a whopping 81 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. And the 2018 model year welcomes the SRT® Demon as the new top-of-the-line model, with a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI® SRT® Demon V8 that churns out 808 horsepower and 717 lb-ft of torque. The Demon engine—which makes the Challenger the world’s fastest 0-60 mph production car with a Flash Gordon-esque 2.3 seconds—is the most powerful engine ever installed on the nameplate. Neither the Voodoo nor the other available Ford Mustang engines stand a chance in matching, let alone surpassing, what the higher-level Challenger workhorses have to offer.

Drivetrain Choices

Both the 2018 Dodge Challenger and the 2018 Ford Mustang use a standard rear-wheel-drive system. The go-to drivetrain for performance-oriented vehicles, rear-wheel drive provides ultimate balance and superior handling, since the engine is placed in the front and the power is transferred to the wheels for a balanced weight distribution from front to back. However, the Challenger offers you the option of an all-wheel drive with its GT trim. That way, the car would perform better on surfaces made slippery by rain, snow, or ice. That option is unavailable on the 2018 Mustang.

Interior Accomodations

With a passenger volume of 93.7 cubic feet, the 2018 Dodge Challenger offers more room than the 2018 Ford Mustang. Consequently, up to five people can fit comfortably in the Challenger; ideally, the Mustang accommodates up to four, especially when you are swapping the fastback body style with the convertible.
